Freestyle motocross, also known as FMX, is a variation on the sport of motocross in which motorcycle riders try to impress judges with jumps and stunts. The two main types of event are big air, also called best trick, in which each rider performs two jumps usually covering more than 75 feet from a dirt-covered ramp, and freestyle, the older of the two, in which riders perform two routines on a course with multiple jumps. Judges score on a 100-point scale for style, trick difficulty, variation, originality and overall performance. Notable events include Red Bull X-Fighters, NIGHT of the JUMPs, the X Games, Gravity Games, Big-X, the Moto-X Freestyle National Championship and the Dew Action Sports Tour. Freeriding is the original, unstructured form, which began in the hills of southern California and is done on public land by riders who form natural jumps and drop-offs.
